SUMMER AUPAIR in  America

Only a limited number of applications are accepted each year. You are only permitted to come to the United States once in this program, and it is the only legal means of becoming a summer au pair in the United States. To be sure of a place, you need to get your application completed as early as possible. Applications cannot be accepted after the 10th April of each year.

Placement period – not negotiable: 4 months May 15th to September 15th  

WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE A SUMMER  AU-PAIR IN AMERICA:

• Work up to 45 hours per week including some evenings babysitting
• Work a maximum of 10 hours per day, childcare and childcare related housekeeeping only
• Your own private bedroom
• Minimum one and half days free per week with one day being Friday, Saturday or Sunday. One full weekend per month.
• Four days paid vacation.
• Comprehensive health, medical insurance cover provided
• US$250 provided by host family towards 3 credit hours of adult  education, American interest, courses. [About 3 hours per week]
• WEEKLY pocket money of US$157.95.
• Flight paid from Johannesburg  direct to the family.
• Opportunity to take 30 days, after expiration of your visa, to travel around America.
• Return flight paid from host family or gateway on West Coast to Johannesburg, provided you have remained on the program for the full 4 months.

To get onto the program:

• You must be between 18 and 26 inclusive.
• Must have passed grade 12 or the equivalent.
• Must be a non smoker
• A driving licence would be a distinct advantage.
• Be prepared to make a commitment to a family from May 15th to September 15th.
• Must have a DVD player and be prepared to watch 32 hours of interactive DVDs, as specified by the American State Department, within 8 days.

What will this cost me? 

At the moment:
1. You can be a summer aupair only once.
2. A standard aupair cannot go back as a summer aupair.
3. A summer  aupair cannot go back as a standard  aupair.
(It is possible that the above 1 - 3 will change in the future.)
4. A summer aupair cannot change status to a standard  aupair once the visa has been issued. 
5. If you do not get a family match and no visa documents have been issued you can change status to a normal aupair.    

You can apply at any time of the year but the final date for completed applications to reach our office is the 28th February for placement the following May. The earlier you put in your application the better your chance of getting a place.
