AU PAIR PROGRAMS OFFERED THROUGH
JCR CULTURAL
Exchange Programs (Pty) Ltd
DO
YOU LOVE CHILDREN?
HAVE
YOU DREAMED OF SPENDING A YEAR IN ANOTHER COUNTRY, NOW WHILE
YOU ARE YOUNG AND FREE?
As part of
your education or while deciding what to do with your life
you can make it happen, by living as a family member with a
host family for a whole year with JCR Intercultural Child
Care Programs. You will help care for your host family's
children in exchange for the rich experience of living as a
treasured "big sister" or "big brother"
in the home of a family in the country of your choice.
HOW DO
AU-PAIR PROGRAMS WORK?
STEP ONE
Going
overseas to live with a family can be the most rewarding
experience if you select a good program. To be safe, you
need to make sure that you are with an agency that has a
proven track record, that follows the guidelines set down
by Governments of the countries offered, that works within
the framework of legal au-pair visas. JCR has been working
in this industry and sending au-pairs abroad since 1994.
JCR and/
or our overseas partners will support you if there is
a problem. Sometimes problems happen because of a
misunderstanding of expectations, sometimes, you or
the family create the problem. In any given situation
when you need help, we provide a 24 hour
emergency support system that you are comfortable
using.
Every
host family has been checked and referenced to ensure
that they do have children, they have detailed their
jobs and expectations, they will comply with govt
requirements and you will not arrive to find
yourself doing work that was not agreed upon.
STEP
TWO
You need to
complete a detailed application. This is important because
families look at applications from all over the world.
Choosing another person to live in their home for a year
or more is a big decision and a huge investment in their
children's future. The more information you can provide
about yourself, your child care experience and why you
want to be an aupair, the easier it will be for a family
to shortlist you. The family already has some peace of
mind because you have chosen to use an agency they trust,
but it is up to you to ensure they want to call you for an
interview. This application can take a week or four weeks
to have complete, depending on the country you choose and
the documents required. For more details, choose a program
to view the documents required.
STEP THREE
JCR will
check your file for completeness and accuracy and then
process it into a format for the host families to be able
to view. Once your file is accepted, you must prepare for
family interviews. The number of families available for
you will depend on how good is your application and the
program you have chosen. There are several families
wanting South Africans in Germany and America and London,
but less in Belgium and Denmark for example. It can
take one week for placement in the UK, US or Germany if
you have a great file, but it can also take up to three
months for you and a family to find each other if you have
very specific requirements, such as only one 5yr old child
and you must be placed in Dallas, Texas!
STEP FOUR
Once you
and a family have matched, program fees fall due and
contracts of employment and visa paperwork is completed.
As visas are legal aupair visas, for some programs such as
Germany, Denmark and Belgium, where the visa is processed
in that country and not in South Africa, it can take from
four weeks to twelve weeks to get your visa. Netherlands
visas take a minimum of three months and can take as long
as five! Visas for the UK and USA are the fastest at two
weeks, so if you are in a hurry, those should be your
program of first choice. Whilst you are waiting you should
write often to your host family and get to know them.
STEP FIVE
Once your
visa is ready, JCR will assist you with your airticket
(most program, this will be provided by the family) and
your pre-departure orientation and support. Your new
host family will meet you at your final airport
destination, often with banners and posters and huge
excitement from the children to greet their new aupair!
