Must
I speak English?
Most host families need an aupair with a good level of
English although a few are looking for applicants with good
Afrikaans. European languages such as German and French are an
asset many host families appreciate.
|
Must I have a driver's license?
Yes, almost all South African families will require their
aupair to be able to drive as public transport even in our
major cities is not suited to the demands of South African
child care. Some host families will expect their aupair to
provide her own car. |
What
are living conditions like for a live-in position?
You can expect your own room and very often own bathroom or
to share a bathroom with the children. Homes are typically
large with gardens. Many families offer self contained
cottages. Most host family positions are located inland in
Gauteng.
|
What will my duties be?
South African families often do not
require domestic assistance from their aupairs. Most
of the duties will revolve around the children and could
include making their meals, driving them to school and back,
arranging suitable play dates and outings, helping with
homework, tidying their rooms and play areas and perhaps
running errands. You will be expected
to contract for a period of one year.
|
What Can I
Earn?
This does vary
enormously from family to family as aupairing is a
relatively new concept in South Africa and there is no set
amount of pocket money as with other countries. Families
can offer salaries in the region of R1500 to R12000
per month and expect 25 to 60 hours per week from an au-pair .
Salaries are written into an employment contract and are
negotiated based on the au-pair's qualifications,
experience, hours, duties and responsibilities. In a live in
situation the accommodation and meals and use of a family
car are all factored into the salary determination.

|
COSTS: There
is no cost to a South African aupair applicant that applies
directly to JCR. An applicant from outside of South Africa must
provide their own medical insurance, flight ticket, language
courses if required and initial pocket money. |
