HOSTING AN AUPAIR IN SOUTH AFRICA - CHOOSING PRIVATE CHILDCARE AS AN OPTION FOR YOUR CHILDREN

Private childcare is now an affordable option for South African families, and families have a choice of a young woman from another country who will share her culture and language with your family or a young South African whose vocation is childcare or she may just wish to see another part of South Africa and take a year out before she studies. 

JCR specialises in offering au-pairs and child minders  for live in or live out, half day or full day child care positions. Finding the right au-pair is a very personal thing, it can be that she just feels right or that she has the right background and qualifications to meet  your needs. You can have peace of mind that all aupair candidates are interviewed and referenced  in their country of origin. They all have a minimum of 200 hours of childcare and or babysitting experienceand many have child care or teaching qualifications. 

International aupairs must be between the ages of 18 and 24, they arrive in South Africa on a cultural exchange visa and may remain in the country for a maximum period of one year. South African au-pairs can be of any age, but are often either applicants that have made child care their career or applicants that are studying and need to earn additional income, or older women with time on their hands.

   AU PAIR EXPECTATIONS

1. An international au pair is expecting to learn about another country, it’s culture, history and environment. This is a year spent on a cultural exchange - an opportunity to explore another country. A South African aupair has either chosen child care as her career or is also wanting a GAP year or part - time income.
2. A live in aupair, in return for a host family providing her with her own private room during the period of her stay, which includes her meals, personal requirements and her salary, is happy to help out in the home with whatever chores are required. She will probably be most happy as a young adult, helping out with younger siblings and performing all child care requirements.  
3. A live-out au-pair is expecting a clear job description, detailing her hours, duties and responsibilities.
4. She is NOT expecting to be treated as a domestic employee and her employer family should not ask her to do anything they themselves would not normally do.
5. An international au-pair is expecting to be able to travel around her host country, to make friends and generally learn all she can in the time she spends on cultural exchange.
6. If English is not her native language , to improve her English and teach her language to her host family.

 WHAT A HOST FAMILY SHOULD PROVIDE A LIVE IN AUPAIR

1. An au pair should be treated as a member of the family. Accordingly she should have her own bedroom within the family home or suitable alternative accommodation. She should not be expected to share a room and must be accorded her privacy.
2. If she has a valid driver’s license she must be given access to the family car.
3. She should have the choice of having all her meals with the family or their children.
4. She should be given time to travel both with the family or with friends.
5. She must be permitted to have friends over and to go out, as any other family member her age would be.
6. She should be given pocket money commensurate with her requirementsand the duties and responsibilities of the position. A rough guide here would be R1500 – R4500 per month for care provided 35-45 hours per week. A nanny or mother’s help with a child care qualification or excellent infant care experience would expect in the region of R4500 to R8000 per month.
7. Should you be in a position to pay a portion of the airfare, the choices of au pairs available will be larger.
