Au pair program in Belgium

Belgium is one country where South Africans experience very little culture shock. The Belgians are warm and generous to strangers and public transport on the whole is good. As a result of the European parliament and EC presence, there is a large cosmopolitan community. Belgium offers three distinct cultures in one country, French, German and Flemish and is extremely central to the rest of Western Europe.Most South Africans are placed within Flemish homes although for those wishing to improve their French, Belgium offers a real alternative to France. It is a requirement of the Belgian work permit that you study their language and the language school is required to provide a certificate of attendance and competency every three months.

The Expectations of a Belgian Host family

Belgians pride themselves on their warm family life. Within that framework, your host family expects you to provide safe, loving, reliable child care assistance for their children for 20 hours per week. You may be responsible for bathing and  feeding the children, playing games, taking them to school and fetching them, supervising homework and taking them to extra mural activities such as horse riding, swimming lessons, art, karate, ballet; arranging play dates with friends and taking them on suitable outings.  You will be responsible for ironing, general housework,  meal preparation, help with grocery shopping and other family chores. Family life is warm, cosy and affectionate.

Being accepted onto the aupair program in Belgium requires an outstanding application, please follow our directions very carefully. Hosting an aupair for a Belgian family is expensive by comparison to other European countries and they can afford to be really fussy about their expectations with regard to your experience and your willingness to be a great aupair, especially as this program is very popular with many countries.

What the program offers you

• Your own furnished bedroom in your host family's home
• Pocket money of 450 Euro per month
• Have one weekend and one day per week off per month
• Work a maximum of 4 hours per day and 20 hours per week
• Work with children aged between 3 and 13
• Be able to travel and explore Europe
• Be given a JCR handbook
• Be provided with your airfare by the host family.
• Be enrolled in a German or French or Flemish language course by your host family.

ACCEPTANCE BY JCR FOR THE AUPAIR PROGRAM

To apply you

• are aged between 18 and 26 inclusive
• enjoy children aged between 3 and 13 years and have at least 200 hours of child care experience with sibling or relatives or friends
• have completed matric
• are a dedicated person, willing to make a one year committment to experience Belgian culture.
• speak French or German or Afrikaans or Dutch or be willing to attend an intensive course in your host family's home language which may be French, Flemish or German. 
• are a non smoker
• have a driver's license
• are willing to put in the efort to provide a superb application file
